A blank canvas is nothing more than the sum of its parts. It’s a simple geometric form. Perhaps wood comprising a crude skeleton with fabric stretched as if to be skin. Personification aside, the eye may see it, but the brain doesn’t care. As if it’s a withdrawn teenager trying to find a place to fit in … simply passed over in favor of other stimuli that provide greater interest.
With one effortless swipe of a brush it all changes. The tiring white expanses are suddenly transformed by the tiny components of a creative master plan. Color and contrast bring the two-dimensional world to life. Something of little value instantly becomes priceless.
Lyrics to a song, words in a book, paintings on a wall … the canvas is always the same for those whose ideas are expressed upon it. Derek L. Muscat’s realm is a board beneath your feet. His ideal is to turn the ordinary into something unique. To keep the creative spirit that spawned snowboarding alive through his ever-inspiring visual expressions on the very boards people ride. His canvas may come from a factory in differing shapes and sizes, but his brushes never change.
